Eco friendly food packaging for Indian food brands

Food brands in India ship heavy glass jars of ghee and honey, festive sweet and dry fruit boxes, and chilled products that need to stay cold. Most of that still travels in thermocol, bubble wrap and plastic trays. Dharaksha makes eco friendly food packaging that replaces those materials: moulded mycelium inserts, printed cartons, corrugated shippers and ParaChill™ insulated boxes, made in Faridabad and dispatched across India.

Ghee, honey and pickle jars

Glass jars are heavy and break at the neck and base. We mould a mycelium insert around the jar, then pack it in a printed monocarton or a corrugated shipper. The jar is held on all sides, and there is no thermocol or bubble wrap for the customer to throw away. Read more on glass jar packaging.

Sweet boxes and festive food gifts

A sweet box gift has two jobs: it has to look good on the table and survive the trip there. For mithai, dry fruit and chocolate gift boxes we make rigid lift-off lid and drawer boxes and printed cartons, and for mixed hampers a moulded insert that holds jars and tins in place. Sweet box design starts with the product: tell us the sweet or dry fruit, the weight per box and whether the food sits directly in the box or inside its own tray or pouch, and we will suggest a structure and board.

For gift hampers and corporate food gifts, see gift boxes.

Chilled and frozen food: ice cream, dairy, seafood

For products that need to stay cold, our ParaChill™ ice box replaces the thermocol box. It is made from mycelium grown on crop waste, with thermal conductivity of 0.032 W/m·K compared with about 0.0365 W/m·K for EPS (thermocol). Sizes run from 2 L to 50 L. More on cold chain packaging.

About food contact

Our mycelium inserts and ParaChill™ boxes are designed to hold jars, tins, bottles, pouches and sealed packs, not loose food. If your food will touch the box directly, tell us at the enquiry stage so we can discuss board and liner options with you.

Why food brands switch

  • Less breakage of heavy glass in courier transit.
  • No thermocol or bubble wrap for the customer to dispose of.
  • Inserts can go in a home compost pit after use.
  • Mycelium is grown on crop waste we buy from farmers.
  • Box, insert and shipper from one manufacturer.

Frequently asked questions

What is eco friendly food packaging?

It is packaging for food products that avoids single-use plastic and thermocol, using paper, board and compostable materials instead. At Dharaksha that means moulded mycelium inserts, printed cartons, corrugated boxes and mycelium ice boxes.

Do you make sweet boxes?

We make rigid gift boxes, drawer boxes and printed cartons that food brands use as sweet and dry fruit gift boxes. Tell us the product and weight per box and we will suggest a structure.

How do you pack glass jars of ghee or honey for courier?

We hold the jar in a moulded mycelium insert, then pack it in a monocarton or corrugated shipper. The insert holds the jar on all sides, so it does not rattle or hit the box walls.

Is there an alternative to the thermocol box for ice cream and seafood?

Yes. The ParaChill™ ice box is made from mycelium and has a thermal conductivity of 0.032 W/m·K compared with about 0.0365 W/m·K for EPS. It comes in sizes from 2 L to 50 L.

Can the food touch the mycelium insert directly?

Our inserts are designed to hold jars, bottles, tins and sealed packs, not loose food. If your food will be in direct contact with the packaging, tell us when you enquire.
