What is a tray box?
A tray box is a base with four walls folded up around it. Small corner flaps on the end walls fold behind the side walls and are glued, which locks the corners square. The top is open, so the product is easy to see and easy to lift out.
Trays are among the most flexible packaging shapes. On their own they work as display trays, food trays and produce punnets. Slide a box sleeve over the tray and you have a drawer box. Add a deeper lid and you have a lid and base box.
How the tray dieline is sized
The base is the inside length and width plus one board thickness, and each wall is the inside height plus half a thickness, measured to the middle of the board. With 1.5 mm E-flute, a 200 × 150 × 50 mm tray has a 201.5 × 151.5 mm base and 50.75 mm walls. The corner glue flaps are sized from the wall height and tinted yellow on the dieline.
For a tray and sleeve pair, make the tray first and note its outside size in the facts panel. Then open the sleeve template and enter that outside length and height as the opening, plus a millimetre or two of clearance.
Good uses for a tray box
Sweets, dry fruit and chocolate trays, bakery and produce trays, gift hamper bases, drawer boxes with a sleeve, and display trays for retail shelves. For a tray that holds bottles or jars, design a moulded mycelium insert with a cavity for each item in the second tab of the tool.
Artwork tips
If the tray goes into a sleeve, only the end walls and the inside show, so keep the main branding for the sleeve. For an open display tray, the front wall is the face shoppers see. The corner glue flaps are hidden behind the walls once the tray is glued.

FAQ
Tray box template: questions, answered
What is a tray and sleeve box?
A tray and sleeve box, or drawer box, is a tray that slides into a four-sided sleeve. Make the tray here, then use the sleeve template with the tray’s outside size as the opening.
Do the tray corners need glue?
Yes. The corner flaps fold behind the walls and are glued to hold the tray square. Keep artwork off the yellow glue areas.
Can I make a tray from honeycomb board?
Yes. Choose honeycomb board as the material. Thick honeycomb needs V-grooves instead of simple creases, so treat the dieline as a guide and confirm the fold detail with your converter.
How deep should a tray be?
Make the walls at least as tall as the product sits, or a little taller if a sleeve or lid goes over it. Enter that as the inside height and the generator adds the board allowance.
Can I download the tray template as a DXF?
Yes. The DXF has the cut lines on a CUT layer and the folds on a dashed FOLD layer, ready for CAD software and digital cutting tables.
